Postal Workers
Postal Workers
This photo was donated to the project by Maurice Spillane from Cornagrade who is a retired Postal Worker and Union Representative.
The photo is believed to date
from at least 1903. A number of people in the photo were associated with Trade Union activities or as they were known at that time staff societies/associations.
In the back row we find from the left, J.A. Nixon who was also in attendance at an Enniskillen meeting of the Postmen’s Federation in 1907.
Beside him is William Clarke
who was the Secretary of the 1907 meeting and went on to found Enniskillen Labour Club in 1918 and was President of the Enniskillen Trades and Labour Council in 1919.
In later years he founded a bus company which operated in the County for a number of years.
In the front row second from the left is Robert Forde who later went on to become the president of the Irish Postal Telegraph Clerks Association in 1909. This photo is thought to be the oldest known trade union photograph in Fermanagh.
