John Jones
John Jones
John Jones is believed to have been born in Liverpool and was brought up in Monaghan before himself and his brother moved to Enniskillen in the early 20th Century. He worked in the Royal Hotel in Enniskillen for a number of years. Ironically many local union branches and the Fermanagh Council of Trade Unions held their meetings in the same hotel many years later.
John became involved initially with the National Amalgamated Union of Labour, the first union to organise the ‘unskilled’ in Fermanagh and was to be later a branch secretary with the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union in its Enniskillen branch. He also became a labour member of the then Enniskillen Urban council and campaigned successfully along with William Kelly for the building of a small number of houses in the old back streets of the town in the early 1930’s. After his death the two streets were named respectively, Kelly’s Cottages and Jones Cottages
